I Heart Macro 8-14-11

The one Kileigh knocked off the tree R.I.P.

Just emerging from its shell!

Stubby little wings, not yet unfurled.

Almost there, just a little more!

And it's all the way out.

My love of the underside still there.

Cool view from below.

An even better one from above.

Side by side, hard to believe this guy fit in that little shell.

Wings unfolded even more.

Glorious! I never knew they were so pretty.

Warning: Very picture intensive post! Thursday am, my daughter Jess called and told me she was watching the strangest thing in her front yard. She thought I might want to get some pictures of it. She thought she was watching a Cicada hatch out of its shell. She said it looked cool almost like a frog. Well. I'm sure not going to turn down a photo opportunity like that! Off I headed, camera in hand. My grand-daughter Kileigh was along for the ride. As soon as we got there, Jess showed me the Cicada and Kileigh promptly knocked it off the tree before I could even snap a picture. I did take several of the bug laying on the ground though. Sadly, this one didn't make it. Not sure if being knocked off the tree had something to do with it or not. Sad. Meantime, Jess's hubby Mike came home and pointed out another on the same tree in process of coming out. I got there just in time to witness most of it. Here are the pictures I took. It was amazing! Thanks for thinking of me Jess. I love you!

What gorgeous photos! Cicadas have to be my favorite insect! They only live two days, after it takes then 7 years to hatch. The boys are having a contest on who can collect the most exoskeletons.

I have never seen anything like that before, amazing images set. I love the last shot, so much details in the wings. The Cicada is quite beautiful.

What a great thing to have witnessed! It is amazing how they stay underground for so long (think about how small they are as eggs, then growing instar by instar - probably 5 shedding stages underground). Each time pumping their body fluids to their max to crack their shell and make the new "skin" expand before it hardens. So delighted you had your camera in hand!
